Science from the IPCC is clear: limiting warming to 1.5oC can help avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Every avoided increment of warming would reduce extremes such as heatwaves, droughts and extreme rainfall.
As of , we are at .
The past eight years have been the warmest eight years on record with 2016, 2019 and 2020 being the warmest three.
2022 is the 8th consecutive year where global temperature has been more than 1oC above pre-industrial levels, according to all datasets compiled by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). The WMO datasets are available here. The WMO now considers it to be highly likely that 1.5ºC will be exceeded between 2023 and 2027.
According to Christian Aid, the 10 most costly climate related events in 2022 each caused more than $3bn of damage – double the figure for 2021. You can read their report here.
